Salvatore and Bradfield in the running for gold at Trans Tasman Tournament

Two Moonee Valley athletes are going for gold after being selected to represent Victoria at the Trans Tasman Tournament.

The competition is run between Special Olympics Australia and New Zealand to provide sporting opportunities to those with intellectual disabilities.

Among the talented athletes competing are Ascot Vale’s Adrian Salvatore and Samantha Bradfield of Bacchus Marsh, both of whom train at Moonee Valley Athletics Track with Special Olympics Melbourne West.

Salvatore, 24, who has a developmental delay and mild autism, competed in the tournament four years ago and said he was feeling good about the upcoming event in New Zealand, which will be his first time overseas.

“It’s going to be very exciting for me to get that experience,” he said.

Salvatore will compete in 100m and 400m walks, long jump and the 4x100m run.

Bradfield, 10, who has global development delay, will compete in athletics, aquatics and basketball.

Mum Katrina said her daughter enjoyed making friends “and the fact that she’s been able to succeed where in mainstream things she hasn’t”.
